Probably the biggest yearly event along this stretch of coast, is the sandcastle festival in Manzanillo. Normally one of the quietest beaches along the coast, the three-day long party weekend transforms Manzanillo into a crowded, happy "Party Central"... .
During the three day festival, usually held in March or April, there are dances, football and horse-racing for everyone's enjoyment, but the highlight of the weekend is always the last day: Sunday, the day of the sandcastle contest.
This is the day when everyone from far and wide seems to pack and their stuff and bring their family to hang out for the day in Manzanillo. Whether you decide to build a sandcastle yourself or not, everyone can have fun playing on the beach, in the ocean, swimming, surfing, eating, drinking and dancing. Several stalls offer different delicacies to eat, and you'll hear lot's of music, some of it live.
Many people go and camp for the entire three-day weekend. There has been dome criticism in recent years that this distinctive and local beach event has become too commercial, but that's just the price of success; everyone can still have a really great time at a unique event, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike - and the sandcastles are really something to see, with prizes for the best.
