The "green" season from May to November is one of the best times to visit the Nicoya peninsula, although the rains can be very heavy in October. In mid-November, the trade winds from the northeast, known as the Papagayo, arrive to signal the end of the "winter". Many flowers are in bloom and in the green season the jungle is at it's most lush and vibrant green from May onwards. In the "green" season there are also fewer crowds, lower rates for accomodation, and cooler temperatures than in high season. The beaches are as interesting as always, but with more driftwood as the rains wash interesting rocks, pebbles, trees and branches down the rivers for the beachcombers.

The number one most important thing is safety. Always keep it safe because, as in any sport doing things wrong and in the wrong place can get you or someone else seriously injured. Therefore I suggest a surf lesson with a qualified instructor.

Tal vez el evento más importante en esta parte de la costa es el festival de los castillos de arena en Manzanillo. Normalmente una de la playas más tranquillas a lo largo de la costa, esta fiesta de tres días durante un fin de semana transforma Manzanillo en una alegre “fiesta central” la cual atrae a mucha gente.
Durante el festival de tres días que usualmente tiene lugar en Marzo o Abril hay bailes, fútbol y carreras de caballo para el disfrute de todos, pero el último día del fin de semana siempre es el punto culminante: Domingo, el día de la competencia de los castillos de arena.
